My AI Position
What I believe about AI, how I use it, and the principles that guide my work.
Every leader needs an AI position.
AI is changing how expertise is recognised, how judgement is exercised and where professional value sits.
As I began using AI more deeply in my own work, I realised I was making a series of deliberate choices. What would I use AI for? What wouldn't I? What risks was I prepared to accept? What standards wouldn't I compromise? How would I be transparent about the way I was working?
Over time, I realised these weren't isolated decisions. Together, they formed a position: a considered way of working with AI that reflected my values, my responsibilities and the kind of leader I wanted to be.

What is an AI Position?
An AI position is the set of deliberate choices that guides how you work with AI.
It goes beyond tools, policies or governance. It reflects the decisions you make about where AI adds value, where it doesn't, the risks that matter most in your context, the boundaries you choose to set and the standards you are committed to upholding.
An AI position isn't fixed. It develops through practice—using AI on real work, reflecting on what you learn and refining your approach as both your experience and the technology evolve
The position I work from
Mine is built around four commitments.
Be
Deliberate
I choose where AI adds value and where it doesn't. I don't use it by default. I use it with intention. Sometimes the most deliberate choice is not to use AI at all. I also believe leaders should be transparent about how they work with AI, especially when trust is part of the work.
Engage with
Emotions
AI is personal. It doesnt just change the way we work - it touches confidence, value and identity. I make space for that discomfort, in myself and with clients, because emotion is part of how we make sense of change.
I move forward with intention, even in uncertainty. I stay willing to reorient as the landscape shifts, adapt as I learn, and take responsibility for the choices I make along the way. You cannot lead others through uncertainty until you are willing to lead yourself through it first.
Be
Agentic
Every context carries different risks. My responsibility is to understand the risks that matter most in the work I am doing, and to make deliberate choices about how I use AI in response.
Be
Risk Aware
This position will keep evolving. That is the point. An AI position changes as your experience, context and the technology changes.
My Transparency Statement
My AI position sets out the principles that guide how I work with AI. This transparency statement explains how those principles show up in practice.
I use AI in a supportive capacity.
The Uncertainty Lab is an AI-enabled practice. I use AI deliberately and openly - including to assist with brainstorming, synthesis, structural refinement, research, pattern identification, data analysis, drafting and testing ideas. I do not use it as a substitute for professional judgement.
I remain accountable.
All analysis, interpretation, professional judgement and recommendations are developed, reviewed and owned by me. Responsibility for every recommendation rests with me.
I am careful with confidential and sensitive information.
Client information is treated as confidential and used only for the purpose of the work. I make deliberate choices about what is shared with which AI tools.
I am transparent about being an AI-enabled business.
I use AI as a core part of my practice. I say so clearly to my clients and explain how it has been used.
I regularly review my position.
My use of AI will continue to evolve as the technology, the risks and my own experience evolves.
