Board AI Snapshot

Know where your board stands on AI.

An independent read of your board's preparedness to govern AI - drawing on each board director's view of their own capability, as well as the board's collective capability. See where views differ and where to focus next.

Why now

AI raises questions about strategy, risk and responsibility that your board needs to judge. For APRA-regulated entities, the April 2026 letter to industry explicitly expects boards to maintain enough AI understanding to set strategic direction and provide effective challenge and oversight.

For broader board guidance, see the AICD and Human Technology Institute's A Director's Guide to AI Governance.

What it looks at

Eight dimensions of a board's readiness to govern AI, from two perspectives: each board director's own capability - how they use AI, how prepared they feel to oversee it, how they assess risk - and their view of the board's capability: how clearly it can see AI use across the organisation, where risks and opportunities sit, and where attention should go next.

How it works

  • An initial conversation with the Chair or Company Secretary
  • A confidential self-assessment for each board director - about 20 minutes
  • Independent analysis of the themes and patterns across the board
  • The written Board AI Snapshot Report
  • A debrief with the Chair, and an optional facilitated session with the full board

What you receive

A written Board AI Snapshot Report and a summary the chair can table. The report brings together the board directors' self-assessments: how they use AI, how prepared they feel to oversee it, what risks concern them and how they see the board's collective capability. It highlights where views align or differ and where attention would help. Reporting focuses on themes and patterns, with care to avoid identifying individuals.

Investment

$6,500 + GST, including the chair conversations, the written Board AI Snapshot Report and a one-page summary the chair can table.

A facilitated session with the full board to work through the findings is available for an additional $3,000 + GST.

What comes next

Use the findings to decide where the board needs to focus. The Snapshot can stand alone, or inform an AI Governance Circle if you want to build the capability together.

Questions

What does each board director assess?

Their own AI capability, as well as their view of the board's collective capability. The self-assessment takes about 20 minutes and covers eight dimensions, including use, preparedness for oversight, risk and visibility of AI across the organisation. The findings are based on board directors' responses, rather than an independent test of their skills.

How are individual responses handled?

Responses are treated as confidential. We agree the reporting arrangements before the assessment and focus the report on themes, patterns and differences in view. In a small board, particular comments can identify someone, so care is taken with what is included and how it is presented.

Do we need to book a Circle as well?

No. The Snapshot can stand alone. You can use the report and chair debrief to decide where the board needs attention and how to respond. The AI Governance Circle is one option if you want to build the capability together.
