AI Governance Circle

Govern AI from firsthand understanding.

Build the AI judgement to ask sharper questions and assess the answers. Board directors gain firsthand experience on their own work, discuss it with peers and connect what they learn to the organisation they govern - its strategic choices, risks and the assurance the board needs.

What you may be hearing

  • "I'm being asked to govern something I'm not yet confident using myself."
  • "We say we're taking a considered approach. I'm not sure we know what we're considering."

How it runs

  • Starts with your board's questions and current capability, informed by a Board AI Snapshot where available
  • Four fortnightly sessions of 90 minutes, focused on the board's responsibilities
  • Between sessions, explore AI on your own work - stress-test a paper, examine its framing or draft questions, using material you are authorised to share
  • Discuss what helped, what was unreliable and what it means for your judgement and oversight
  • Develop your own AI risk position and examine the implications with your board peers
  • A closing board debrief and report on what participants have learned and where attention is needed next

What the board leaves with

  • Firsthand experience to draw on when assessing what AI could mean for the organisation
  • More informed questions for management and a stronger basis for judging the answers
  • A shared discussion of AI opportunity, risk appetite, accountability and assurance
  • A documented record of starting views, reported learning and priorities for further work

With your executive team

Where the executive team is doing the same work, a joint board and executive conversation can be offered - if and when the board wants it.

Questions

How is this different from an AI briefing or course?

It builds on what you know and connects it to your responsibilities as a board director. You explore AI on your own work, check what it produces and discuss what you find with your peers. We use that experience to examine the organisation's opportunities, risks and oversight - and the questions the board needs to ask management.

Do we need a Board AI Snapshot first?

No. A Snapshot is useful if you want independent analysis of board directors’ self-assessments and their views of the board’s collective capability. It can inform the Circle, but we can also agree a starting point through the initial discussion.

Can I work with you individually?

Yes. The Governance Circle works with your board. Private AI Advisory supports you one-to-one with the questions, decisions and responsibilities in your own board role.

Is the work confidential?

Yes. We agree how the group will protect what is shared, what will be reported and whether any sessions will be recorded. Any recording requires prior consent. We also agree how sensitive material will be handled, including any use of AI tools, so board directors can ask questions and explore concerns openly.

What would help your board govern AI well?

Bring the questions your board needs to work through. Let’s explore how firsthand experience and discussion could strengthen its judgement and oversight.
